Merry Christmas!

Although the cartoon at left suggests a white Christmas it appears Middleton and Nova Scotia will have a green Christmas this year.
If the wind and rain and storm surges let up, however, the roads will be good for families getting around on Christmas Day and afterwards.
I've enjoyed the break from blogging, and I seem to have put my energies into learning animation and conversing with friends and former students on Facebook.
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Hiatus

It looks like I'm slowing down. Over a year of pictures and comments. A few outside contributionsm but 95% were mine.
I have a few others I might post in the new year if I get my battery re-charged, but for now the site will stand as is. It's on to other projects.
While there's nothing new, there is a year of wonderful pictures and memories.

July 29, 1928

July 29, 1928 - Fred E Bentley, his wife, Mary, Marion Shaffner, Doris Bentley and Bernice Bentley Fisher. Mr. Bentley was Middleton's third Mayor, 1915-16. The Bentleys and Shaffners lived in the matching homes at 189 and 185 Main Street. My mother was married the previous year. - NF

Morse Cemetry

A few images ago, I mentioned the Planters. Dick Morse answered with this picture and note: The burial place of Abner and Anna Morse who came to Nova Scotia in May 1760 and settled near Bridgetown. All the Morses in Nova Scotia descended from these two Planters. They are my great, great, great, great grandparents. The cemetery has been designated an Heritage Site and is being cared for by The Morse Cemetery Care and Maintenance Society, a chharitable organization.

Days of Yore

Some of that Middleton gang probably around 1950. Who's the dude in front all dressed up ? Any comments on where or when it was taken ? I forget who gave it to me awhile back. - N

Year of the Planters

2010-2011 are years of celebration. Communities in Nova Scotia are marking the 250th Anniversary of the Arrival of the New England Settlers or Planters. Truro will give greater import to next year, but there have been announcements. I believe the Annapolis Valley has begun its celebrations this year. My mother's side of the family, the Bentleys, were Planters. T mark the occasion, I drew two Planter children and placed them near the present day Palliser Restaurant in Truro, close to where the settlers landed 250 years ago. - N

The Loudspeaker 1949

Received this yearbook recently, and not sure how well you'll be able to read the names of those who put this prestigious publication together. Oh, those Gestetner machines. Remember you can click and enlarge the pictures and use arrow to return to the blog. Noted drawings by Nancy Hudgens and Neil Fisher. Where was your work, Corning ? Busy circulating, I guess.

Macdonald Reunion

Two pictures from a Macdonald Reunion some years back - 1998, I believe. You'll see lots of familiar faces and hopefully some names will come to mind. I see Denny and I are in both of them. The top picture includes Nancy Hudgins, Jessie Cumming, my brother, Fred, Fred Grimmer, Audrey Giffin, Helen Hankinson, Sonny Dowell and Len Dention, to name a few.

Camps and Cottages

Growing up in Middleton, cottages were on the ocean and camps were in the woods. Camps were initially associated with hunting and fishing. I remember enjoying both camps (Trout Lake) and various cottages in Margaretsville. Eric kept the camp tradition alive in New Brunswick, and a number of us were lucky enough to enjoy his hospitality, generosity and fine cooking skills. Here are some scenes from the camp in Juniper in the 90s.

The Gates Canoe

In 1997, I believe, the Annapolis Valley Macdonald Museum in Middleton celebrated the cratsmanship of Harold Gates with a display on the Gates Canoe. I thought this picture should enter the blog and pay tribute to an outstanding Nova Scotia craftsman who was also the father of one william Harold Gates, our Bill Gates. Coincidence: this weekend there is a canoe regatta at Kedji. Do you suppose there will be some Gates Canoes there ? The picture of Harold Gates is from Older Ways: Traditional Nova Scotia Craftsmen by Peter Barss.

View like a Painting

We have been weeding our photograph albums. Came across this one and had to add it to the blog. This was taken around 1990, the view from the cottage we rented from John Fox. Jessie would know this view well. I can't resist pictures of Margaretsville and the Bay of Fundy.

The Bruce House

The hub of much of our activity growing up was the Bruce household. Getting Bev off to school, playing catch with the pro ball players, eating fresh, homemade doughnuts, chatting with various generations of Bruces. It was a happy, caring, lively home, the memories of which will always be treasured.

Port George Light

To cool off during this heat wave, let's take a drive to Port George. I can give a closeup later, but I like this picture of the road and shoreline too. Although Margaretsville seemed to be the preferred site, I also enjoyed an outing to Port George. Thanks for the picture Bette and Rick.

It's the BBQ Season

Now, what did I leave out ? The musquitoes and flies ? The Little Woman bringing out the supplies and utensils ? An empty beer can or two on the ground ?
Kids asking when it's going to be ready ? a Boston Bull running around in circles, getting all excited ?
That was how we barbecued in the past. It is so much more civilized now. Right ?
Hope everyone had a great July 1st holiday and now we're celebrating our neighbour's birthday, the 4th.

July 1 - Canada Day

I know I should have a Canada image, a beaver, flags and all, but growing up in Middleton meant baseball, often a July 1st doubleheader, usually with one of the Halifax teams.
First the booths and games on Commercial Street; then baseball at the park. Later our first strawberry shortcake.
Yeah, Cardinals. Yeah, Middleton. Yeah, Canada Day.

Class of 51

The second class to graduate from MRHS. There we are in all our youth and with the world and our lives ahead of us. Great group! It's very special that many of us have kept in touch over the years. Unfortunately a number have passed away. Yet, the rest of us have a Reunion coming up in July. How many will we recognicze ?

Memorial and Cemetery

We may forget that lives were lost during WWII on this side of the Atlantic. Some were as a result of accidents during training flights with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Some of these airmen are buried with this BCATP Memorial in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Lower Middleton.

margaretsville Light

Received this thank you card from the Toronto Fishers awhile back. It was printed from an original watercolor painting, "Margaretsville Light," by Christine Ritchie. Margaretsville was an important part of our youth. Hey, I need a picture or painting of the ice cream parlours.

Falcourt Inn

I borrowed this fine picture from the Falcourt Inn web site; hope they don't mind. http://www.falcourtinn.ns.ca/ We have enjoyed staying there on several occasions and we've also had special meals there as well. I imagine it's booked for the Reunion in July. (Many of us remember it as the Max Napthall (?) place. )

Middleton Baptist Church

eBay always has Middleton postcards in its collectables section. This one shows the Baptist Church, I believe, but I'm not sure when. Every now and then you should check out the cards available; they provide glimpses of our past. Perhaps you will become a collector.

A Crock of Beans

Didn't have a Middleton picture, so I did a bit of graphic doodling. Sometimes I find a picture or clip art that doesn't quite cut it; therefore I need to do some searching, cutting and pasting to bring it up to scratch. Hope it shows up all right. Now, we'll all have to do some searching for Middleton pictures to get me back on track.

Downpour in boston

Three (Bette; Eric; Neil) of the four Middleton Amigoes as they try to regroup after a heavy downpour at Fenway Park. It would have helped if we had figured out how to get in a poncho before it rained. Great weekend. Baseball, Fenway and Middleton go together well; however, the Yankees were dominant that weekend.

Going to school - 1963

Carol Ann Cole has sent a picture circa 1963.
She's going to get a drive to MRHS from Wilmot in George White's new (first) car. That's a full armload of books, Carol, and we didn't have the backpacks they use today.

Laura Secord Motel

An eBay postcard mentions the Laura Secord Motel in Middleton, circa, the '50s. Did we decide if this was the one across from the hospital ? What name changes has it gone through ? "The Laura Secord was built by doug MacNeil but the other Laura didn't approve of the name. It becane the Driftwood Motel and later the Fundy Spray. A corner store was added and the units are now rented out to students and low rental housing. It is just west of Maple Ford across from the bowling alley." Thanks, Gerald.

Reunion: 10 Years ago ?

Here are some of those, mostly members of the Class of '51 as they looked when they attended the MRHS Reunion ten years ago. A few have passed on since then, and I wonder how many will be in Middleton this July for the 2010 60th MRHS Reunion Celebrations.

Baseball

In lieu of anything more recent, I've retreated to the days of the H&D League and a Chambers' cartoon. Most of us think of chambers as the great editorial cartoonist, the one before today's excellent artist, Bruce MacKinnon. Chambers also did the occasional sports cartton. This one captures Garneau Seaman, one of the brothers from Liverpool who also played one season or more in Middleton.

Olympic torch

The Olympic Torch is carried along Main Street as it passes through Middleton. Is that the Bruce's house in the background ?

Middleton, 1906

I was searching eBay for CF Fisher postcards, but didn't find any. I found this one, however, Commercial Street, Middleton, 1906.
With the MRHS Reunion coming up, I should be concentrating on the last sixty years insteading of finding things in the remote past.

Margaret(s)ville

Time to leave the heat of the Valley, go over the mountain, and enjoy the cool breezes of Margaretsville. This picture, submitted by my nephew, was taken in 2008. I wonder if the cottages are getting closer to the edge.

Tribute to the Briar (2)

In 1951 the team from Kentville won the Briar. The team of Don Oyler, George Hansen, Fred Dyke and Wally Knock went undefeated, 10-0, the first team to do so. They outscored the opposition 116-60. The picture and stats were taken from the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame website. (http://www.novascotiasporthalloffame.com/)

Tribute to the Brier

Tried to find a cartoon or picture celebrating the rink from Kentvlle which first won the Brier for Nova Scotia. Instead I found this Chamber's cartoon of a Provincial Bonspiel in the Forties. JD MacKenzie skipped the rink from Middleton.
Quite a thing to do that many caricatures! (By clicking on the picture you can enlarge it; the arrow top left will return to the norm. - N)

CAHA 1937

Hanson Dowell made a major contribution to amateur hockey in Nova Scotia. His contribution has been recognized with his induction into the Middleton Sports Wall of Fame, the Truro Sports Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. Here is a meeting of the C.A.H.A. at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto in 1937. I understand that Hanson Dowell and Carl Fisher were respectively President and Secretary of the MAHA at that time.

Baseball Nostalgia

Bucky Tanner - Home, Tampa, Florida, age 21, weight 215, height 6'4", pitches for Middleton Cards. In 1944 was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers from high school and farmed to Newport News (Piedmont League) '45 Mobile Ala. (Southern Assoc.) and Montreal royals. '46 Brooklyn Dodgers from where he jumped to the Mexican League with the Mexico city Reds where he teamed on the pitching staff with Max Lanier. Last winter he played in Cuba with the Alemendares Club. (from Maritime Baseball: Pictorial Yearbook 1947, p. 25.
For jumping to the Mexican League, both Lanier and Tanner were banned from Major League baseball, but Lanier was later reinstated. He played ball for St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and St. Louis Browns.
Imagine, from Brooklyn Dodgers to Middleton Cardinals in a year!

Baseball

The is one of several copies I have of Maritime Baseball, a periodical that celebrated baseball in the region in the 1940s. I don't believe that pictures from this magazine will scan well, the quality seems quite poor. I was going to select a few of the famous Middleton Cardinals that appeared here.

Anyway, the Major Leaguers are assembling in Florida, and baseball will be on its way across North America before long. This magazine cover is used to both recall the heady days of baseball in Nova Scotia and announce that Spring and baseball will be here before we know it.

Hurricane Hazel

Anyone remember Hurricane Hazel. I believe it was the hurricane that toppled the trees at my grandparents' home. A search mentions 1954 and that it hit Toronto and southern Ontario hard. Do any of you have hurricane stories or pictures ?

Vaughn Reagh

Vaughn Reagh 1902-1976 was one of the original inductees of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. Vaughn was a fireballer, with the Middleton Baseball Team of the 1920s, culminating in the provincial championship in 1923. That year he was invited to a tryout with the Boston Braves. Besides being one of the finest pitchers in the province, he was an excellent hitter and first baseman. For this picture and information, I'm indebted to the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame which you can visit at:

Canadian Canners

This picture of Canadian Canners elicited numerous comments in some of my recent emails. Some of my buddies found summer employment which no doubt encouraged them to go on in their education and find different employment. My Middleton summer employment included the Peat Moss fields in Alyesford and McKenzie's Cold Storage in Middleton. Any other industrial pictures ?

May Hibernate

Seem to have a lot on my plate - meetings, getting a newsletter out, and collecting stuff for a TAS Art Exhibit. Most of the art is art and will be paintings, scuptures, etc. but they seem to want a cartoon element, comic relief. Therefore, I've got to collect, select and frame as well as doing some digital items. Fun, but time consuming. I amy hibernate, or retreat to my den, and put my two blogs on hold for awhile. Cheers, Neil

Sunday Afternoon at the Beach

In the midst of this cold snap, let's go to the beach in Margaretsville, late Twenties or the Thirties. I can see my father and mother nearest the camera. Besides my mother is a Dr. Mullhall from Liverpool. His wife and her two sisters continue that row. The last lady with the hat is my Grandmother Fisher. Not sure who the youngsters are. If my brother or I are there; we're young and hidden.
May be before our time. - Neil

60 Years of Hockey

These two pictures, forwarded by Wilf, were in a brochure celebrating 60 Years of Hockey at MRHS. Hope the celebration events in Middleton were a great success. Most of us remember the old rink. I always got a skating pass as a Christmas present (didn't help my skating much), and most of the hockey teams pictured earlier played in that rink. The new one must have been quite an achievement and improvement.
